A Brief Reunion on Shangri-La's Summer Pastures
June marks the finest time of the summer pasture in Shangri-La, Yunnan.23-year-old Yangzom Tsomo is setting off on a journey home with her 3.5-year-old daughter, Gesang Lhamo. They return to her hometown, Niru Village. Then together with her father and younger brother,they embark on an arduous travel lasting nearly eight hours,finally reaching Xingzhan Pasture -the summer pasture with no running water, electricity, or mobile phone signal.Her mother, Tsering Yangzom, who was grazing on the pasture, came to greet them early. This is the first time the whole family has reunited at the summer pasture in five years. The next day, they shear wool on the grassland.
As night falls, a bonfire is lit.A dozen neighbors, and some Daocheng, Sichuan, and Muli guests, some Tibetan, Naxi, and Pumi from Ninglang, Yunnan, neighbors and relatives sit in a circle,their singing and laughter echoing long into the night.It is late when everyone heads home.Tomorrow, they and all the creatures on the land will welcome a new day.
