Dried radish strips enrich Wujie town

In the just passed April, dried radish strips produced in Wujie town of Nanhua county in Chuxiong Yi autonomous prefectural, central Yunnan, sell well.

Dried radish strips are piled up in the trade center of plateau agro-products in Wujie. Large trucks and small vans shuttle between the piles. Workers were busy picking, packaging, packing and loading.

“I bought about a ton of strips today which can be sold for over 4000 yuan,” said Luo Dechang, a buyer.

“I was working outside but now it is the time to sell radish strips, so, I came back,” said Luo Shaochang who brings home-made strips to the center, “I have 9 mu of radish. These strips are all home made.”

Buyers are not only local but also come from many other places like Zhejiang province, Chongqing city, and Guangzhou city. “Wujie has great radish strips of reasonable price. And the high output meets my factory’s demand,” said Xu Jun, buyer from Guangzhou, who runs a food processing factory. He hoped to get long-term cooperation here.

“I bought about 3000 tons of strips this year from Wujie and surrounding towns,” said Luo Wanhua, person in charge of the trade center, “and the output value is expected to reach 15 million yuan.”

Luo has been running such business for over a decade. Consequently, he and other villagers now enjoy raise in income together. When the season of buying strips comes, Luo will hire more than 20 workers. Today, a worker can earn 150 yuan per day. In the past, the number is only 80.

Up to 2023, the cultivated area of radish in Wujie reached 38.5 thousand mu (about 2,566 ha) with an output value of 320 million yuan. With 26 enterprises purchasing agro-products in the township, more than 50 thousand tons of dried strips are transported to every corner of China. This business paves Wujie a way to prosperity.
