Launch of the Cultural Exchange Events – Sri Lanka of 2022 “Beautiful China, Colorful Yunnan”

Kunming, May 21  The 21st of this month coincides with International Tea Day. the launching ceremony of Cultural Exchange Events – Sri Lanka of 2022“Beautiful China, Colorful Yunnan” and International Tea Day Activities held in Kunming of China, Colombo of Sri Lanka, Islamabad of Pakistan, New Delhi of India, and Kathmandu of Nepal both online and offline.

The friendship and exchanges between China and Sri Lanka can be traced back to ancient times. Yunnan of China is the recognized origin of tea trees in the world. In the 19th century, China’s tea trees began to be sent to Sri Lanka, which, together with Assam tea trees from India, later gave rise to the world-famous Ceylon Tea. The year 2022 marks the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Sri Lanka, and the 70th anniversary of the signing of the Rubber-Rice Pact. As China’s influence center facing South Asia and Southeast Asia, Yunnan Province and Sri Lanka have a long-standing friendship.

With the theme of “Fragrant Tea · Beautiful Landscape”, this activity is jointly sponsored by the Information Office of Yunnan Provincial People’s Government and the Foreign Affairs Office of Yunnan Provincial People’s Government. The activities this time will be held online and offline simultaneously, including exchanges and promotions, on-site tea tastings, expert forums, theme exhibitions, etc.

Qi Zhenhong, Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka, said in a video speech that since the establishment of diplomatic ties 65 years ago between the two countries, China and Sri Lanka have always respected each other, and united and helped each other. Since its outbreak, China has provided all-round support for Sri Lanka to fight the pandemic and revive its economy. We hope that the two countries of China and Sri Lanka can make concerted efforts to continue to promote the high-quality development of “the Belt and Road Initiative”, so as to make continuous progress towards building a bright future for the Community of Shared Future for Mankind.

Palitha Kohona, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to China, expressed his gratitude for China’s support and assistance. He said in a video message that the Rubber-Rice Pact was the origin of the friendship between Sri Lanka and China. Since then, the relationship between the two countries has been continuously improved and deepened, and China has provided great help to Sri Lanka in many fields. The activities for this time include the promotion and exchange meeting of Chinese and foreign tea enterprises to create new opportunities for cooperation in the tea industry and trade between China and foreign countries. An international seminar on tea culture will be held to promote cultural exchanges and mutual learning between China and foreign countries with “tea” as a medium. The online photo exhibition for “Fragrant Tea · Beautiful Landscape” will be launched to tell the stories about “tea” across mountains and rivers.
